Our History

Founded in 1967 in the heart of Kingston 6, St. Andrew, Mona Heights Primary School began its journey with a clear vision: to provide exceptional primary education that would shape the leaders of tomorrow. Established during a pivotal time in Jamaica's educational development, the school was built with the understanding that quality education would be the foundation for the nation's future prosperity. From its earliest days, Mona Heights Primary embraced the motto 'Virtue & Labour,' recognizing that true success comes from the combination of moral character and dedicated effort. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Mona Heights Primary steadily built its reputation as a center of academic excellence. The school's commitment to holistic education meant that while academic achievement remained paramount, equal attention was given to developing students' character, creativity, and physical abilities. This balanced approach began to yield remarkable results, with graduates consistently performing well in secondary schools and the school gaining recognition throughout the St. Andrew parish. The 1990s and 2000s marked a period of significant growth and achievement for Mona Heights Primary. The school began to establish itself as a leader not only in academics but also in extracurricular activities. Students started bringing home championships in various sports, particularly netball, while maintaining the high academic standards that had become the school's hallmark. The institution's reputation for producing well-rounded, confident students began to attract families from across Kingston and beyond. In recent years, Mona Heights Primary has reached new heights of excellence that truly distinguish it as one of Jamaica's premier primary institutions. The school's crowning achievement came in 2024 when our students claimed the prestigious TVJ Schools Quiz Championship, demonstrating their intellectual prowess on a national stage. This victory, combined with our current status as netball champions for St. Andrew and second-place finish in the primary schools gymnastics competition, showcases the school's commitment to developing excellence in all areas. Today, Mona Heights Primary stands as a testament to what can be achieved through unwavering commitment to educational excellence. With literacy and numeracy levels consistently exceeding 85% and over 92% of Grade 6 students achieving Pathway One placement in PEP examinations over the past three years, the school has firmly established itself among the top-performing primary schools in Jamaica. Under the current leadership of Principal Alex Hepburn, Vice Principals Sherone Christian and Chrismay Reynolds Watson, and Board Chairman Delroy Alleyne, Mona Heights Primary continues to honor its founding principles while embracing innovation and preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
